July 1st: The Law Changes, the Future of Relief Begins
Something big is happening in Georgia, and we’ve been waiting a long time to say these words: the era of "Low THC Oil" is coming to a close.
Starting July 1st, 2026, thanks to the passage of SB 220 (The Putting Georgia’s Patients First Act), our state’s medical cannabis program is finally growing up. It’s evolving from a restricted, often confusing "oil-only" program into a true medical cannabis system designed to actually meet the needs of the people it serves.
If you’ve been feeling like the old 5% cap wasn’t quite cutting it, or if you’ve been waiting for more options than just tinctures, this is the news you’ve been hoping for. It’s a milestone. It’s a breath of fresh air. And most importantly, it’s a giant leap toward removing the stigma surrounding plant medicine.
But before you rush down to see us on the morning of July 1st, there are a few things we need to chat about. The law is changing, yes, but the products on the shelves will take just a little bit longer to catch up.
Let’s walk through what’s changing, what’s coming, and why this is the perfect time to get your medical card.
From "Oil" to "Medical Cannabis"
The first change is a simple but powerful one: the name. For years, Georgia has used the term "Low THC Oil." It was a cautious phrase for a cautious time. But SB 220 officially rebrands the program. From July 1st onward, we are talking about Medical Cannabis.
This might seem like a small detail, but words matter. Moving away from "Low THC Oil" acknowledges that this is medicine, and it acknowledges the full power of the plant. It’s about dignity. It’s about recognizing that cannabis is a valid, effective part of a modern wellness routine.
At Lotus Farmacy, we’ve always treated it that way. We’ve always been more than just a dispensary, we’re a boutique pharmacy where luxury meets personalized care. Seeing the law catch up to that philosophy feels like a win for every patient in the state.
Breaking the 5% Cap
This is the part everyone is talking about. Since the beginning, Georgia patients have been limited to products containing no more than 5% THC. While that’s been life-changing for many, for others, especially those dealing with chronic pain, severe nausea, or late-stage conditions, it wasn't always enough to provide the relief they truly needed.
On July 1st, that 5% cap is officially gone.
Instead of a percentage cap, the state is moving to a dosage-based system. Registered patients will be allowed to possess up to 12,000 mg of total THC. This shift allows for higher potency products that can actually address the symptoms patients are struggling with. It means more flexibility and, ultimately, more effective relief.
New Ways to Find Relief
It’s not just the potency that’s expanding, it’s the variety. We know that every body is different. What works for one person’s insomnia might not work for another person’s Crohn’s disease. SB 220 recognizes this by expanding the types of products allowed in Georgia.
Get ready to see:
Gummies and Edibles: Finally, a discreet and long-lasting way to dose.
Vaporized Cannabis: For patients 21 and older, vaporization (including flower/leaf for vapes) is officially joining the lineup. This is huge for those who need rapid onset relief.
Topicals and More: A wider range of lotions, patches, and capsules to fit your lifestyle.
Important Note: While vaporization is now legal, smoking (burning) cannabis remains illegal in Georgia. We’re keeping things clean and medical, which aligns perfectly with our elevated boutique experience.
The "Green Light" Factor: Why We Need a Little Patience
Here is the part where we have to ask for a little bit of that "calm energy" we love so much at the pharmacy.
Even though the law officially changes on July 1st, you won’t see these higher-potency vapes and gummies on our shelves that very morning. Before we can stock and dispense these new products, the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission has to give us, and the cultivators, the final green light.
There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work involving testing, labeling, and regulatory approvals that has to happen first. We expect the new products to start arriving in late summer or early fall.
Don't worry, though. We’ll be keeping you updated every step of the way. Think of this as the "pre-launch" phase. The future of relief is signed and sealed; we’re just waiting for the delivery truck to arrive.
Expanded Access: Is Your Condition on the List?
One of the most heart-centered parts of SB 220 is that it opens the doors to more people. The list of qualifying conditions has been expanded and the language has been softened to ensure people don’t have to wait until they are in "end-stage" illness to get help.
New or expanded conditions include:
Lupus
Autism
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Stage III HIV
Severe Alzheimer’s Disease
If you’ve wondered in the past if you qualified, now is the time to check again. You can read more about the specifics in our guide to the 7 things medical patients need to know about SB 220.
Why You Should Get Your Card Now
You might be thinking, "If the products aren't coming until late summer, why should I get my card now?"
Be clear, be confident, and don’t overthink it: getting your card now means you’ll be first in line when the new products drop.
The registration process can take a little time, and we expect a huge surge in applications as July 1st approaches. By getting certified now, you ensure that as soon as the Commission says "go," you’re ready to walk in and find the relief you've been waiting for.
Plus, your card is now valid for five years (up from just two!). That’s five years of knowing you have legal, safe access to the medicine that helps you feel like yourself again. If you're not sure if a card is right for you, we have a great post on the truth about needing a medical card in Georgia that can help clear things up.

A Final Reassurance
July 1st is more than just a date on a calendar; it’s a symbol of progress. It’s about a state choosing to put patients first and recognizing that wellness isn't one-size-fits-all.
If you’re feeling a mix of excitement and "when-is-it-actually-happening" jitters, that’s okay. We feel it too! But remember, the hard part— the legislative battle is won. The law has changed. The path to better relief is open.
Stay patient. Stay hopeful. We are working hard to make sure our shelves are stocked with the highest quality, most effective products the moment we are allowed to share them with you.
Later will take care of itself. It always does.
We can’t wait to see you at Lotus Farmacy.
